SANTIAGO.- The measures taken by the government to push along the General Education Law (LGE) were not merely limited to negotiations with the political committee, since apparently it also resorted to the power of persuasion that could be exerted by the OAS Secretary General, José Miguel Insulza, over members of Parliament.
This was the indication given by the Minister of the Presidency, José Anonio Viera-Gallo, who acknowledged that Insulza had called a couple of Parliament members in order to request their votes.
“José Miguel Insulza called at least two or three deputies from abroad in order to ask them to support President Michelle Bachelet´s initiative”, Viera-Gallo explained during an interview with Radio Agricultura this morning.
The minister also stated, “we wanted former President Lagos to do the same, but I am not sure he was able to, because he was about the leave for Canada”.
