SANTIAGO.- Official sources reported today that Chilean and Spanish governments have signed a new air treaty which will allow legal flights traveling between the two countries to increase from 21 to 28, 19 of which grant the right to transport passengers to third countries.

The agreement was signed by Chile's secretary general of the Civil Aeronautics Board (JAC), Jorge Frei, and the assistant director general of the Ministry of Spanish Promotion for the Use of Air Transport, Eugenia Llorén Beltrán de Heredia, and updates the former document signed by the two countries in 1974.

According to Frei, "from now on, Chilean and Spanish airlines will be able to operate with agreements that will allow for better operational as well as commercial flexibility".

He explained that the signing of the deal signifies concrete benefits for the industry, since it establishes a set of opportunities for companies to provide better passenger and cargo services.

"It also increases the supply of transportation available for the main route connecting Chile to Europe", he stated.
