SANTIAGO.- A strong earthquake was reported at 6:27 AM today in Santiago.
The quake lasted 40 seconds and registered a magnitude of 4.9 on the Richter scale within the capital. According to preliminary information, the epicenter of the movement was located 75 kilometers to the north of Santiago.
In the Region of Valparaíso, the seismic activity reached an intensity of IV degrees on the Mercalli scale. Shakes were also felt in Rancagua and San Fernando, with intensities of IV and II degrees respectively.
In the Region of Coquimbo the event registered intensities of II degrees in Salamanca and Illapel, while an intensity of III degrees was reported in Los Vilos.
The event accompanied a series of tremors that were registered during the weekend in different areas of the country including Tocopilla, which was recently devastated by a strong earthquake.
The city of Valparaíso had also been shaken by a previous earthquake at 3:30 AM with an intensity of IIIdegrees on the Mercalli scale, also affecting Viña del Mar and Quilpué.
