SANTIAGO.- Concerning the eruption of the Llaima volcano in the Ninth Region, Minister of Interior Belisario Velasco stated today that necessary safety measures were taken as soon as the crater began to fume and spews of black smoke were observed.
Some local residents had complained that, according to their judgment, warnings were issued too late. Responding to the criticism, Velasco stated that "appropriate measures were taken in a timely manner; so far, the eruption has not affected any people or livestock and we hope that it stays that way".
Velasco also maintained that towns near the volcano have not had any problems, and that the local emergency committee is watching carefully in order to announce any necessary measures to be taken in the case that the situation worsens.
"All necessary measures are being taken, we have planes flying over the Llaima zone, Conguillío Park and surrounding areas in order to foresee any potential problem and resolve it immediately. Actions are being taken, there are previously-established plans", he asserted.
