VIÑA DEL MAR.- Nicolás Massú (no. 70 in the ATP) appeared at and then immediately disappeared from the ATP tournament in Viña del Mar early this morning after losing the first round by 7-6(3), 6-7(4) and 6-3 to Argentine Sergio Roitman (no. 72).
After three close sets and 3 hours and 19 minutes of play, the Viña del Mar native was not able to turn the score around and defeat Roitman, whose game grew better over the course of the match.
Massú did take the first set however, after 1 hour and 25 minutes, with a score of 7-6(3). But the second set was different, and the Argentine evened out the board with a score of 7-6(4). During the last stretch, Nicolás Massú could not turn the game around and categorically lost by 6-3.
In light of his defeat, the Chilean player can expect to fall some 20 spots in the ATP ranking due to the fact that he was not able to match the 120 points he won after making it to the finals during last year’s tournament.
