SANTIAGO.- The new President of the Association of Municipalities, Buin Mayor Ángel Bozán, confided to El Mercurio that he is happy with his new challenge and spoke about the General Education Law (GEL).

Regarding to GEL, Bozán clarified that it is an improvement upon the Organic Constitutional Education Law (known as LOCE), but said that the main debate continues to surround the quality of education. “To address that matter, we need to start discussing the educational financing law”, stated Bozán.

Additionally, Bozán revealed that he would be meeting with the Minister of Education Mónica Jiménez this morning to discuss the issue.

On the other hand, the Mayor of Buin assured that municipal schools have been the only ones to offer true public education.  “We don’t discriminate, we don’t make parents pay monthly fees and we (the municipalities) leave our doors open so that any Chilean has the right to free public education”, asserted the mayor.

Concerning the issue of educational profits, Bozán was emphatic about his opinion and placed the blame on the unequal competition that exists between private subsidized schools and those run by the municipalities.
