SANTIAGO.- Chilean tennis player Fernando González (ATP Nº10) has been given a competitor for his debut at the second round of the Madrid Masters Series.
Tomorrow, Chile's number one player will go up against French player Gael Monfils (ATP Nº18), who recently eliminated the Chilean from the ATP quarter-finals in Vienna, Austria.
Monfils moved ahead in the Spanish tournament today after defeating Italian player Fabio Fognini with a score of 6-2 and 6-4 in just over an hour.
This will be Fernando Gonzalez' first opportunity to have a rematch against Monfils after losing to him 6-3 and 7-6(2) at the Austrian tournament, which was has been the one and only confrontation between the two players in the professional circuit.
Gonzaléz will have to defeat the French player if he wants to at least reach the semi-finals in Spain, which would allow him to enter into the realm of possible classification to the Shanghai Masters – a tournament that only includes the eight top players of the season, with the Chilean currently situated in position 11 of the "Race of Champions".
