Accident on Route 5 South leaves one dead and five injured

A passenger bus collided with a truck that was transporting lumber.

SANTIAGO.- A 60 year-old woman was killed after the bus she was traveling in collided with a truck at the 450th kilometer of the Ruta 5 Sur highway, between the towns of Bulnes and Cabrero, in the Bío Bío Region.


According to reports, a bus belonging to the company "Bus Norte" was traveling from Puerto Montt to Valparaíso when it tried to pass a truck that was transporting lumber.  The truck's load came loose and impacted the window shield of the bus, causing the bus to topple on top of the truck.


The fatal victim, whose identity has not yet been confirmed by police, had been traveling from Rahue Alto, Osorno. Her body was taken to the Legal Medical Service in the town of Los Ángeles.


According to Radio Cooperativa, another five passengers were injured and sent to the Hospital de Bulnes, from where they were later discharged.


Meanwhile, police have detained the 37 year-old driver of the truck, who lives in the municipality of El Bosque in Santiago, as well as the 59 year-old bus driver, who lives in Valdivia.
