MADRID.- Fernando Gonzalez closed out another year of professional growth and ended the season with an anticipated seventh place in the world ranking. Gonzalez totaled 2,005 points and was able to keep his position after winning only one match during his participation at the Masters Cup in Shangai.

At the event which invited only the top eight players in the world, Gonzalez defeated number one, Swiss player, Roger Federer for the first time in his career, but lost the following two matches in his group (Roddick and Davydenko), which resulted in his elimination during the first phase.

For the rest of the Chileans, 2007 has been a year of contrasts. Nicolás Massú has particularly suffered during this eleven-month period. He was never able to pull himself together and, far from improving on the court, he seems to have worsened.

From position 79, Massú will try to win back his joy for competing and training, with the guidance of Patricio Rodriguez and Leonardo Zuleta. His main objective is to have the athlete from Viña del Mar happy and playing well, allowing results to come on their own.
