Three alleged robbers involved in a spectacular escape in Providencia

Two of the suspects, who apparently were preparing to rob a bank, we able to be detained by police. One of the suspects shot himself in the abdomen.

SANTIAGO.- A man was injured after a self-inflicted shot to the abdomen which occurred while he was fleeing from police in the commune of Providencia.


The situation occurred just after 10:00 AM today, when (according to police sources) police noticed three suspicious individuals in the vicinity of the Santa María tower, where two bank offices (Banco de Chile and BCI) are located.


After spotting police, the individuals ran in different directions and one of them, who was running towards the Costanera Norte area, shot himself in the abdomen, causing him to collapse in the middle of the street where he was detained by police.


Another of the suspects was arrested behind the Sheraton Hotel, while the third was apprehended near San Cristóbal hill.


According to initial police investigation, the suspects may have been preparing to carry out a heist on one of the banks.
