SANTIAGO.- The new National Public Attorney, Sabas Chahuán, has indicated that his first priority will be to better "understanding" between public attorneys and victims.
The new authority announced that he has already spoken to the Ministry of Justice in order to begin working on the matter and perform an assessment of service received by victims, as well as establish a unique system to measure civil safety.
According to Chahuán, it is necessary to establish a common framework, "because sometimes it is measured by incidence of victimization, other times by the sensation of fear or amount of crimes reported".
During a conversation with Radio Cooperativa, Chahuán stated that the new justice system has worked quite well, but that the "system's transparency makes it easier to notice shortcomings".
Regarding the anti-crime agreement signed by the government and opposition, Chahuán has high expectations for the elected victim's advocacy department.
He did, however, seem opposed to the creation of a judicial police force because, in his opinion, "Chile is fine with the police that is has".
