SANTIAGO.- A bullet-ridden confrontation was produced this morning between central San Bernardo police and a group of assailants who had robbed the Calera de Tango municipal building.

According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened at around 9:00 AM, just moments after the criminals had entered the municipal building in order to steal approximately 19 million pesos.

Colonel Rodolfo Pacheco reported that the gang fled first in a truck and then in a car, as they "randomly" fired shots at police.

Their escape looked unsuccessful at the corner of Avenida América and San José roads, where there was another exchange of fire.

Police officials were able to capture three of the criminals, while two others managed to escape.

Among the items seized from the suspects were a bulletproof vest, two revolvers, a pistol and an AKA rifle with two cartridges, which was the weapon used by the attackers in the robbery at the municipal building.
