Man murdered his ex and then committed suicide in Batuco

SANTIAGO.- A shocking case of murder-suicide took place today in Batuco after a man stabbed his ex-girlfriend to death and then took his own life using the same weapon.

The incident occurred at 6:45 AM when Pedro Jaime Rivera Gómez (43) confronted his ex-girlfriend, Margarita Isabel Chandía Torres (33), beating and stabbing her repeatedly in the torso, then leaving her for dead.

The man then went to his sister's home where, according to police, he stabbed himself to death.

Eric Contreras, sub-prefect of the Colina Criminal Investigation Force, explained that the event was brought about by the fact that the woman had a former boyfriend whom she had left to be with Rivera.

Three months ago, however, the victim left Rivera to return to her former lover, which may have provoked the feelings of jealousy presumably involved in the murder.

The case will be investigated by the North-Central Public Attorney's Office.
