SANTIAGO.- Currently visiting Chile, Actress Leonor Varela took the opportunity to become a part of the mission to protect the whales and support other initiatives related to the cause.

The actress has promised to assist in the quest to protect the marine ecosystem, urging organizations to take steps in defense of the whales, aiming to foster the creation of the Multi-Use Marine Area and Protected Coast in the areas of Chiloé, the Gulf of Corcovado and the Chonos Islands.

She demonstrated her support by participating in talks and expositions offered in Valdivia by the non-profit organizations Blue Whale and the World Wildlife Fund (WWF).

Varela stated that she wants "to educate herself in order to better understand the complexity of the zone. And of course, the most suitable way to do so was through direct dialogue".

The actress' campaign has already seen results, and she herself has explained that, out of the 51 marine species at inhabit Chilean national waters, 31 of them are listed in the proposed project. These include blue whales, hunchback whales and various types of dolphins. For all of these reasons, Varela is urging that the protective measures be taken quickly.
