SANTIAGO. - President Michelle Bachelet faced harsh criticism from the UDI following her decision to keep Transportation Minister, René Cortázar, in his current position despite an agreement reached months ago regarding his resignation.
Deputy Patricio Melero, who heads the Transantiago Investigation Commission, stated that Chile is “the only country in the world where, 24 hours after the Deputy House indicates 30 responsible parties and points out the system’s failures, the President of the Republic, instead of requesting a resignation, rejects it”.
“The only thing currently keeping Cortázar in his position is the President’s support, but the rigorous improvement of Transantiago that the Chileans have hoped for does not exist”, he stated.
He added that Cortázar´s announcement of resignation was consistent with the agreement, since transportation has not yet returned to normal, and December was the deadline that he had established.
