SANTIAGO.- A group of unknown suspects attacked an ATM machine with an incendiary weapon early this morning in a Banco de Chile branch office located at 2681 San Pablo.

According to police sources, the event was brought to their attention at 12:13 AM after law enforcement services received an anonymous phone call to report a fire inside the building.

After arriving at the location, however, uniformed police officers discovered that an area on the western side of the building with entrances to the two ATM machines was completely covered with smoke.

Firefighters arrived at the scene and broke the glass entrance door in order to ventilate the enclosed space.

The flames only affected one of the two ATM machines and, after speaking with witnesses in the area, police determined that no explosion had occurred.

Media outlets received an e-mail message this morning in which the "Anti-capitalist Attack Group of Martyrs of the Santa Maria School" claimed responsibility for the action.
