SANTIAGO.- Minister Urbano Marin was elected by 16 votes today to become the new Supreme Court President and will assume his new position on January 6th, 2008.
The minister, who currently occupies the position of spokesperson, will be the head of the Supreme Court for two years.
During the voting process, three votes were received for Minister Milton Juica, two for Judge Orlando Álvarez and one vote for Minister Adalis Ovarzún.
The official announcement was made by the current president of the Supreme Court, Enrique Tapia, who asserted that a second voting process was not necessary due to Marin’s landslide win.
The results of the election were consistent with a poll taken by “El Mercurio” which identified Minister Urbano Marin as the strongest candidate for the position, followed by Milton Juica, Nibaldo Segura and Orlando Álvarez, the candidate with the longest tenure in office.
