SANTIAGO.-  Minister of Education Yasna Provoste rejected the idea that differences between private and public educational institutions have grown. However, she did acknowledge that socio- economic conditions influence scores on the PSU (University Entrance Exam).

“What you see in the results is not an increase in the gap (…) what you see, and this continues to be a challenge, is that the gap has stabilized”, she stated.

According to the Secretary of State, this stabilization is “mainly due to the change made from the PAA (Academic Aptitude Exam) to the PSU, because the PSU covers more material”.

Nevertheless, Provoste acknowledged that “what the experts are saying is in fact true; the socioeconomic gap is similar to what we have seen in recent years”.

She added,“unfortunately, in Chile, socioeconomic conditions influence test results and this is a very segregated system”.
