SANTIAGO.- The former mayor of Santiago, Joaquin Lavín, has said that statements made by Senator Jorge Arancibia (who had called the former city leader a “neighborhood destroyer”) constitute “the type of language that is detrimental to politics in Chile” on his way out of the Equity Council’s reporting meeting with President Bachelet.
“I don’t want to run again for the moment”, assured the former UDI presidential candidate while referring to a possible campaign to become senator of the Fifth Costal Region, which is currently being represented in the Senate by Jorge Arancibia.
Yesterday, Arancibia (who plans to keep his seat at next year’s Parliamentary elections) said that if Lavín were to present himself as a candidate “he is going to have to go up against me”.
According to UDI study performed two months ago, Lavín is in the best position, with a 42% support rating for a possible senatorial election – beating his competitor, former government spokesperson Ricardo Lagos Weber, by six percentage points.
