SANTIAGO.- The vice president of the Party for Democracy (PPD), Guido Girardi, has stated that Transantiago “is one of the biggest mistakes the Concertación has ever made”, adding that “if this problem didn’t exist, we wouldn’t be arguing about whether or not there will be a fourth administration”.

When asked during an interview with TVN whether he would back the Law being proposed to provide the Transantiago transportation plan with ongoing subsidies, the senator for the PPD responded with a disclaimer. He would love to support the initiative but he also has to consider the 300 million dollars that would be handed over each year saying, “it is an enormous amount of money that could also be put towards health or education”.

“We have already offered up resources and these companies are holding the country hostage, they have not improved the frequency of buses, there is scant night service and there is still no fleet management system”, he asserted.

“I have asked that the contracts be changed because I am not willing to write a blank check so that they can stick it in their pocket, I am not willing to let Santiago be held hostage by these companies”, he warned.
