SANTIAGO.- Viviana Agurto, the young mother who was urgently in need of a liver donation after suffering from a sudden case of fatal hepatitis, successfully received the transplant in a surgery performed early this morning at Clínica Las Condes.

The woman, who was placed at the top of the national list of donor recipients, is currently recovering from the surgery in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at the medical facility.

Agurto is still connected to an artificial breathing machine, but has been listed in stable condition. According to the physicians in charge of the surgery, the next 72 hours will be crucial to her recovery.

Radio Cooperativa has reported that the family of an anonymous 56 year-old man who passed away at the Sótero del Río Hospital after suffering from severe head trauma, claim he was the donor of the liver that went to Agurto.

Agurto's husband, Héctor Opazo, thanked the donor's family but opted not to make any statements to the press, saying that he was too exhausted to do so after the long wait during his wife's surgery.
