SANTIAGO.- While reiterating her wishes of success for the newly inaugurated President of the United States, Barack Obama, President Michelle Bachelet has once again asked Parliament to approve the automatic registration and voluntary voting bills in order to emulate the democratic example that, in her opinion, has been set by the American people.

The Head of State proposed that the massive celebration witnessed yesterday in Washington to welcome Obama to the White House should be “a call to attention” for Chile and especially for the political leaders who today, she stated, face the challenge of “taking the steps necessary to renew our democracy, increase voter registration and open up opportunities for participation and decision-making among young people”.

Deputy Alberto Cardemil (RN) –who is a member of the Constitution, Legislation and Justice Commission of the Chamber-  assured that he will vote in favor of the constitutional amendment due to the fact that he believes it is a good idea to “work towards certain and genuine voter registration as well as voluntary voting”.
