SANTIAGO.- After Senators Eduardo Frei (DC) and José Antonio Gómez (PRSD) registered yesterday to participate in the Concertación primaries in hopes of making it to the presidential elections, the secretary general of the UDI, Senator Víctor Pérez, expressed skepticism regarding the persistence of the radical party candidate despite the fact that he has scarce support amongst the left-wing parties.
“José Antonio Gomez’s candidacy is being used by the center of power within the Concertación to distract public opinion as well as keep Frei from having to face the issues that are being debated presently and which could put his campaign at risk, such as the Mirage case, corruption and abortion”, stated Pérez.
The senator stated, “it is naïve to think that the radical presidential hopeful has a chance against the DC candidate, especially when he has already been given the support of the PS and PPD leaders, who form part of the main power network within the left wing coalition”.
