SANTIAGO.- "Chile is not a corrupt country", reiterated Government Spokesperson Neftalí Carabantes in reference to the arrest of the Commissioner of the Anti-narcotics Investigative Brigade of Los Andes, Gonzalo Araya- along with three other officials- for their implication in the trafficking of confiscated marijuana.
"Independent studies show that Chile and its institutions function very well. The PDI (Police Investigative Unit) has a level of prestige that we cannot tarnish over individual actions", affirmed the spokesman in an interview with Radio Cooperativa.
Carabantes asserted that the Government places great trust in its institutions and that these events are "absolutely" isolated, specifying that in an organization of 22 thousand employees, only five cases of corruption have been detected in the past year.
The government official went on to comment that, in the police training schools, new recruits are imbued with the values and principles of the institutions. He also pointed out that these very same police officials are the ones who have detected and reported those who have violated the doctrine.
