SANTIAGO.- The National Consumer Service (Sernac) has asked for the Lápiz López bookstore company and Dimeiggs retail company to explain why they reported prices that were lower than those registered by the organization's auditors.

The director of Sernac, José Roa, stated that the situation was discovered while putting together a report on the prices of school supplies, saying "this is suspicious behavior, and that is why a written explanation will be requested".

"We are waiting for a clear and satisfactory response from these companies", added Roa, indicating that the organization he heads is making the information public so that consumers "can make their own decisions".

Roa also told Radio Cooperativa that, if the situation is not clarified, Lapiz López and Dimeiggs could be sanctioned.

Undercover Sernac employees went to check the prices at some of the school supply stores and found noticeable differences in prices, up to 25% higher in the case of Dimeiggs and up to 98% higher in the case of Lápiz López.
