SANTIAGO.- Eighty nautical miles marked the difference between the Chilean and German fleets while crossing Cape Horn last night.
This is the most dangerous phase of the "Portimo Global Ocean Race", where competitors have had to battle strong winds and waves up to 10 meters high.
"It was always our goal to be the first ones to cross Cape Horn in this competition, we wanted to go in with our flag waving and greet our country, our family, our friends, our Navy. We are happy and very moved", stated Felipe Cubillos.
This phase has no doubt been the most significant challenge for the Cubillos-Muñoz fleet, which named their ship "Desafío Cabo de Hornos" ("Cape Horn Challenge"). The name was given not only in reference to the extreme conditions of the area, but also because it is Chilean territory.
The Chilean Navy was in charge of safety provisions, making sure that all of the participants were able to pass through the dangerous area unscathed. Furthermore, a naval ship also transferred the family and friends of the both athletes, who waited for hours for the ship to pass.
