SANTIAGO.- The Minister of Interior, Edmundo Pérez Yoma, continues making a favorable recovery after undergoing a kidney transplant surgery yesterday at the Hospital Clínico of the Universidad Católica.
Dr. Christian Trucco, who presided over the operation performed on the minister, has said that the "hope" is that Pérez Yoma will return to his home to rest for "five to seven" days, but indicated that this is contingent upon his recovery.
The surgeon stated that the head of cabinet is already walking around and eating more normally, and pointed out that he is recovering well.
With regards to a possible rejection of the organ, Trucco explained that, while there is a risk, Pérez Yoma is currently taking immunosuppressant medications and in the case that there is some kind of complication, there are treatments that can be performed to minimize the possibilities of rejection.
The medications Pérez is taking lower the body's defenses, and he has been allowed only select visitors in an effort to prevent infection.
