Police Captain involved in traffic accident

34 year-old Mauricio Arenas San Martín of the 31st Commissary of San Ramón reportedly collided with a taxi.

SANTIAGO.- A collision that took place this morning at the intersection of Avenida Ossa and Simón Bolívar in the municipality of La Reina has left two people with varying degrees of injuries.


The incident took place at 6:10 am, when a Nissan Terrano truck being driven by Police Captain Mauricio Arenas San Martín (34) of the 31st Commissary of San Ramón southbound along Avenida Ossa collided with a taxi owned by 78-year old René Aburto Zúñiga, who had 27 year-old Alejandra Núñez Vargas travelling with him at the time.


According to the on-duty official at the Prefactura Oriente, Captain Claudio Valencia, the collision took place on the west side of the road; however both vehicles ended up on the eastern side of the road due to the force of the impact. The accident caused a traffic jam in the area approximately four blocks long.


As a result of the crash, the two individuals travelling in the taxi received varying degrees of injuries and were taken to Hospital Salvador. Meanwhile, the Police Captain was not injured.


According to Captain Valencia, both drivers say they passed through the intersection with a green light, prompting personnel from the Traffic Accident Investigation Department (SIAT) to be dispatched to the scene in order to determine the cause of the accident.
