Cargo train goes off tracks and leaves one person injured

The incident caused delays in train service due to the fact that there was only one direction fit for use in the area.

SANTIAGO.- Five of the 27 cars of a train belonging to the company Fepasa went off track today at the 57th kilometer near San Francisco de Mostazal in the Sixth Region and left one person injured.


The incident took place at approximately 5:50 AM as the train was traveling from Talca to Santiago.


According information released by the company in the form of a memo, the incident was caused by "repairs that were being performed on the railway by EFE employees". Meanwhile, Chilean Federal Railways has indicated that the causes of the accident are still being investigated.


SAMU, police and Fepasa personnel were dispatched to the scene following the accident.


The injured person, who was hurt while working on a project in the area, was taken to the Rancagua Hospital and is currently listed in stable condition.


The event caused delays, as only the north-south direction of the railway was open in the area and had to be shared by trains traveling in both directions.
