SANTIAGO.- Good news arrived from London today amid the current crisis within the Chilean Davis Cup team following the resignation of Fernando González. As a result of the World Group Play-offs drawing today, Chile has been paired against Austria to play a home match in hopes of cementing a position.
If the team remains the same as the one that lost during the first round against Germany, the highest level player for Austria will be Jurgen Melzer, who is currently seeded at ATP No.27. The rest of the Austrian roster is made up of Stefan Koubek (ATP No.215), Alexander Peya (ATP Np.183) and Julian Knowle, who specializes in doubles and is currently positioned in 25th place for the category.
If González does not reconsider his decision not to play in the competition, Capdeville and Massú will have a high probability of keeping Chile in the World Group, considering the current winning streak of the former following his participating in Estoril and the extra motivation of the latter to play for his country.
Another factor that adds to Chili's possibilities is that the nation managed victories in both previous clashes with the Austrian team (which took place during the 1950s).
