SANTIAGO.- Without even dishevelling his hair, Chile's number one tennis player, Fernándo González, made it through to the third round of the Roland Garros tournament.

While González easily defeated Czech player Jiri Vanek on Monday (6-3, 6-2 and 6-3), today he continued his impressive game play.

The Chilean athlete defeated Portuguese national Rui Machado in only 1 hour and 24 minutes with a scoreboard identical to his winning match on Monday.

Five break points allowed González to cement his victory: one in the first set, and two in the second and third set.

The Chilean tennis star, who closed out his match against Machado by breaking his serve with a crossed backhand, will play in the third round against the winner of the match today between Marat Safin (seeded number 20 in the Paris Grand Slam tournament) against French player Josselin Ouanna (ATP No.134).

With today's victory, González is already assured 40,600 euros in prizes (some 31,600,000 Chilean pesos, equivalent to 56,500 U.S. dollars), which is what he will be awarded if he is defeated in the third round.
