MELBOURNE.- The top seeds for the Australian Open were announced today as seventh-seeded Fernando González prepares for his match tonight against the sixteenth-seeded Cyprian player, Marcos Baghdatis, at the Kooyong Classic exhibition tournament in Melbourne.
González will be the fourth seed at the season's first Grand Slam tournament, beginning on Sunday at the Melbourne Park courts. The number one player for Chile will have to rack up some 750 to defend his position after making it to the finals last year along with Roger Federer.
Federer was named the number one seed, followed by Spanish player Rafael Nadal (No. 2 in the ATP) and Serbian player Novak Djokovic (No. 3).
Three Argentine players appear on the list. David Nalbandian (No. 10) will be the 10th seed at the tournament, Juan Ignacio Chela (No. 20) the eighteenth and Juan Mónaco (No. 23) the twenty-first.
The number-one female player, Justine Henin of Belgium, is the top seed for the women's division. Following Henin is Russian player Svetlana Kuznetsove (No. 2) and Serbian player Jelena Jankovic (No. 3). U.S. player Serena Williams (No. 7), who holds current the title for the open, was seeded in 7th place.
