Famous singer testifies against Tito Beltrán: "How could I sing a duet with him?"

SANTIAGO.- Dozens of photographers awaited the famous Swedish singer Carola Häggkvist in the Ystad district courthouse today, where she arrived to testify in the case of sexual abuse against Chilean tenor Tito Beltrán.

Häggkvist stated that she remembered the nanny who was presumably raped by Beltrán in 1999. "She was very shy", she said.

According to "The Local" newspaper, Häggkvist testified about the tour she and Beltrán had been on together, saying: "My first thought was, how can we continue this and how could I sing a duet with him (Beltrán)?".

Häggkvist claimed that she had personally spoken with the nanny about what had happened. "She was very broken up, upset, emotional and humiliated. She clearly felt that she had been raped", she said.

During cross-examination by Defense Attorney Thomas Bodström, the singer maintained that there was no indication that the nanny's accusation came from "regret" about having voluntarily slept with Beltrán. "She was a victim (…) It was clearly true", she asserted.
