SANTIAGO . - Problems continue for residents in Maipú as threats of new protests are being made by Transantiago drivers after 16 managers belonging to the companies of Alsacia and Express were fired.
The union members were removed from their positions following initial protests held last week in the municipality of Maipú . Some 600 drivers working for Alsacia and Express had protested, alleging they were not being paid for extra hours worked.
In light of the situation, special police security continues at the companies´ bus terminals hoping to prevent problems for other drivers and residents in the area.
Most of the complaints being voiced by workers have to do with the fact that the drivers who were fired were protected by the labor union, compelling representatives to hold a meeting this morning to discuss the situation.
“We have decided to begin legal proceedings and continue with various protests in order to pressure political authorities to take some initiative once and for all”, the leader of Alsacia, Manuel Zarricueta, told Radio Cooperativa.
The drivers have stated that they are even considering hunger strikes as a way of manifesting their discontent.
