SANTIAGO.- Doctors at the San José Hospital have declared themselves in a state of “ongoing assembly” (meaning they will not tend to patients unless there is an emergency) as a way of pressuring the sub secretary of Help Networks, Ricardo Fábrega, to take back statements he made concerning a “lack of dedication” among the facility’s medical team.

Hospital employees have given the administration a 24-hour ultimatum to put the public declarations into effect, which are also being scrutinized by doctors, who have criticized the xenophobic attitude on the part of Fábrega concerning the Peruvian woman who gave birth in the waiting room at the medical facility.

Doctors held a meeting today where the recently appointed hospital director, Jaime Acuña, said that he would not assume his new position unless the administration apologizes. “I will not take on the position if I have to turn my back on you”, stated Acuña.

The group will hold another meeting at 8:30 AM tomorrow where the hospital’s medical team will reconsider the “ongoing assembly” status.
