SANTIAGO.- As it joins the world of digital television, Chile has three possible options. The three alternatives being considered by the government are the American format (ATSC), the European format (DVB) and the Japanese format (ISDB), all of which have their own strengths and weaknesses.
An analysis performed by the Universidad Técnica Federico Santa María (USM) in March of this year set aside the American format (ATSC) as the most viable option. The study was performed after being requested by the Ministry of Transportation (which also asked for evaluations from 6 other universities) in order to form an advisory committee to come up with recommendations for the best option.
“All three formats fulfill the necessary technical requirements, so choosing one over another would not change things too much. We recommend the American format based on the economic advantages it offers”, stated Sergio Olavarría, the Director of the Department of Electronics at USM.
During the era of analog television, due to several reasons (Including political and social influence), the entire Atlantic coast of South America adopted the European standard (PAL), while the Pacific coast used the American standard (NTSC).
