CURICÓ.- Argentine vulcanologists have warned of major smoke column activity in the Planchón-Peteroa volcanic area located in the municipality of Romeral in Curicó. The increased activity has prompted monitors to be installed near the zone, located on the Argentine border.
Argentine expert Darío Trombotto has caused alarm after being quoted in a printed media source in his country saying that the Planchón-Peteroa volcanoes have registered “intense volcanic activity, exhibiting numerous smoke columns”.
Immediately, emergency offices in Curicó proceeded to verify the information by various means.
According to the newspaper El Centro, it was confirmed that activity has indeed seen an increase over the last few days concerning the amount of smoke columns being emitted by two, practically unformed cones, such as those of the Planchón and Peteroa volcanoes. According to Romeral´s municipal emergency chief, José Luis Piña, only one of the volcanoes is currently active.
