SANTIAGO.- The presidential delegate for the emergency response in Chaitén, Paula Naváez, has announced that authorities are in the last stage of a process to remove those who were forced to evacuate their homes due to the volcanic eruption from shelters in Puerto Montt so that they may be taken to more adequate makeshift homes.

“In Chiloe, we have been able to get all of the families out of the shelters and in Puerto Montt will do most of the work today and hope to have only 50 families remaining in the shelter there”, Naváez told Radio Agricultura.

Naváez explained that the process to transfer the people out of the shelters is directly related to the offers to house them and stated that they are financing hostels and cabins in an attempt to offer decent hopes to those affected by the tragedy.

Regarding the current situation of the volcano, the presidential delegate stated, “it is changing by the minute, the smoke column changes according to the direction of the wind”.

Narváez added that the area is still “in the midst of the disaster, we are not out of the woods, it is a developing emergency situation, there is a group of experts constantly monitoring the volcano and the water levels”.
