SANTIAGO.- Traffic was stopped for 20 minutes on the corner of Doctor Johow and Grecia Avenue, across from the University of Chile Department of Philosophy and Humanity in the municipality of Macul after a group of approximately 20 students blocked the street with fiery barricades.
The incidents, which ended without arrests, began just after 7:30 AM and caused a large traffic jam on both streets.
The protesters destroyed trashcans as well as some wooden furniture, which they used to build a fire in the middle of the street.
The Chief of Police, Luis Alt, indicated that the problematic situation was finally brought under control after Special Forces dispatched to the scene managed to get the students to return to their campus.
Traffic in the area has currently resumed to normal, although stones, as well as pieces of furniture and iron poles taken from the university can still be seen in the street.
Meanwhile, officers from the 18th Police Station have remained in the area to prevent further disturbances.
