SANTIAGO. -  President Michelle Bachelet finally decided to name General Eduardo Gordon the National Police Chief for the next four years, ending doubts as to whether it was constitutional to designate the officer as an acting official until 2009.

The announcement was made by Government Secretary General Francisco Vidal, who attended the meeting the President called with General Gordon early this morning at La Moneda.

Vidal read a statement explaining, “due to the vacancy left in the position of National Police Chief last Friday, May 30th, following the death of General José Alejandro Bernales, a successor must be chosen”.

“The President of the Republic, making use of such notion, has proceeded to name General Eduardo Gordon, who is currently the Assistant Chief of Police, for a period of four years starting yesterday”, read the declaration.
