SANTIAGO.- The Secretary General of the Executive Branch, Antonio Viera-Gallo, stated this morning that the Executive Branch is confident that the General Education Law (LGE) will obtain the 69 votes necessary for its approval and said that, while it will spur controversy between the parties, the government believes the education proposal will be accepted.

During a conversation with ADN Radio Chile, Minister Viera-Gallo referred to the topic just hours before the law is scheduled to be debated today at the National Congress.

With respect to the changes that the LGE will generate within the Chilean education system, Viera Gallo clarified that the government’s objective is to have quality schooling, and although there would not be any immediate changes, the law represents significant progress in the matter.

Concerning the demonstrations being carried out by educators following a call to actionissued by the Teachers´ Association, Minister Viera-Gallo stated that they were not a problem, since it is all part of a democracy.

“I think it is good that the teachers are attending a democratic debate, with different points of view on a law proposal”, he stated.
